It took me 14 years to finish that book, and I wasn’t interested in continuing on with writing, BUT, then I got the idea for my Of Witches and Warlocks series. In my 20’s I finally started that novel, Castle in the Clouds, but I never published it. I dabbled in poetry and writing very short stories through my teens, but I always wanted to write a “big” book. I just passed my 5 year publishing anniversary, but I actually started “writing” at the age of 9, because I loved Nancy Drew novels and they inspired me. My schedule is currently being reorganized with my editors and new books are coming soon!įiona: When and why did you begin writing? I’m just getting back to work now, albeit with a slower and more relaxed pace to my schedule, so I can try to stay healthy and not put myself under so much pressure. Latest news is that I’ve been really sick the past several months and had to suspend all my upcoming releases. I’m a former EMT, music major, art lover, and author, married to a wonderful man for nearly 25 years, with six beautiful children (3 Girls/3 Boys), an awesome son-in-law, and two gorgeous grand babies, (1 girl/1 boy). Perhaps it was due to her unobtrusive demeanor among those who knew her, she is remembered for her quiet way. Though she lived well into the dawn of food television and the celebrity chef era, she never had a television show, nor did she peddle her own line of cookware. Unlike many of her contemporaries, however, Edna Lewis never became a household name. In 2014, Lewis was honored by the United States Postal Service-commemorated on a postage stamp as much for her advocacy of the farm-to-table methods of traditional Southern cooking as for her rejection of the knee-slapping stereotypes of the American South and its food. The author of four cookbooks-the best known being her 1976 memoir-infused The Taste of Country Cooking-she earned the praise of the food literati of her era, including Craig Claiborne, M.F.K. When Edna Lewis died in 2006, she was among the most beloved figures of American food. Nearly thirty years after Doomsday Book was first released, this is far easier to see than when the novel was first released. This suggests (strongly) that Willis uses her own background to ground her development of the concept of how individuals handle difficult times. Her England is more like the current US in the way it handles the influenza outbreak than it is like the way the UK is handling things, though there is overlap. Her novel is a perfect little microcosm of period assumptions and gives an insight into how she sees societies functioning. Besides, I’m here to talk about the Middle Ages as we read them in fiction.Įxcept… the most profound aspects of this novel often involve how she thinks a future society would deal with a virus such as the one we have among us now, and how people in the fourteenth century actually handled it. I won’t talk about how different her plague and epidemic are to our current pandemic – that’s another analysis entirely. When she is sent to the Middle Ages, an influenza epidemic has broken out in her time. Kivrin Engle is a scholar who investigates history through travelling to the place and time she is researching. The premise of the story is one of time travel gone very slightly awry, with devastating consequences. Through it, we discover the relationships between people and the relationships of those people with the world around them. Willis’ dialogue is critical to her presentation of the Middle Ages.
